How do I buy Switchvox for a virtualized environment?

Purchase a Switchvox Software Registration Code as normal, with the appropriate number of Users for your system. Upon purchasing the Switchvox Software, you will receive access to the VMware and Hyper-V images.

Can I switch from a Switchvox Appliance to Switchvox Virtual?

Yes, but your Switchvox Subscriptions must be current to access the latest image files.

If there are telephony cards used in the Switchvox appliance, those services will need to be managed with a gateway. In such a scenario, Switchvox needs to have a SIP provider defined for the gateway. See Sangoma's VOIP Gateways

What if I have expired Subscriptions, and I want to use Switchvox in a virtualized environment?

You must renew your Subscriptions to access the latest image files. Use the Subscriptions Wizard to determine the options available for your Registration Code. Switchvox cannot be used in a virtualized environment with Silver Subscriptions.

What if I am already running Switchvox in a virtualized environment, what should I do?

The following are the best practices for moving to an officially supported version of Switchvox in a virtualized environment:

  1. Update Switchvox to the latest version of the software (following the Best Practices for Updating Switchvox). This will include creating a Backup file of your configuration on the latest version.
  2. Obtain the virtual image with the appropriate disk space allocated, and install Switchvox using the virtual image.
  3. Apply the backup file created in step 1 to the Switchvox installed with the virtual image.

If I am already running a virtualized environment, is there a reason I should buy an appliance?

No. For a customer who is already managing their business in a virtualized environment, we recommend putting Switchvox in the virtualized environment instead of on a Switchvox Appliance.

Can Switchvox run with a shared NIC?

Yes. There is no requirement for Switchvox to have a dedicated physical interface.

Can I use the External Music on Hold feature?

No. Switchvox cannot recognize the hardware.

Supported Versions

What version of VMware is supported?

  • Switchvox versions 8.x: vSphere 6.7 or later.
  • Switchvox versions earlier than 8.x: vSphere 5.5 or later.

What version of Hyper-V is supported?

Windows Server 2016 or later and a generation 2 virtual machine.

How do I choose a Switchvox Virtual Image?

Choose an image with the appropriate amount of disk space allocated. The installation images let you easily install Switchvox with VMware or Hyper-V.

What images are available to download?

There are multiple images available, for the disk space that is specified. You will need to decide how much space Switchvox will require. For reference: a one-minute audio file is ~1 megabyte. Switchvox will need space for voicemail greetings, voicemail messages, sound files you upload to Music on Hold or Sound Manager, etc.. Apart from audio files, Switchvox will also need space for call logs.

How do I access the latest image files for Switchvox?

Open a technical support case and include your Registration Code, to obtain a download link.

Resources

What resources must I increase to allow for more phones and concurrent calls?

Phones: CPU and Memory
Concurrent calls and recordings: CPU, memory, and efficient Disk IO

What is the maximum number of cores I can allocate?

A maximum has not been defined at this time.

What are the maximum phones I can have, and maximum concurrent calls?

On a Switchvox appliance, the maximum number of phones is 1,000 and the maximum number of concurrent calls is 200 (assuming you are running Switchvox 6.7 or later). If your Switchvox in a virtualized environment has abundant memory and CPU and highly efficient disk IO, then you will likely be able to serve more phones and more calls, and also be able to record more of the calls. However, we cannot guarantee specific numbers because it will vary wildly with different manufacturers' products.
