Make a Backup Before Applying an Update

  • Create a backup of your current system (see How To Manage Switchvox Backups).
  • Download the backup to another drive (you can download it to your workstation by clicking on the blue disk).
  • Ensure that you have an installation disk with the Switchvox ISO of your current version and a DVD drive. For example, if you are on version 5.11.1, make sure you have the 5.11.1 ISO on a disk. Or, locate your Switchvox installation DVD, if that is a recent release.
  • Ensure no one is currently using Switchvox (check under Server > Current Calls). We recommend you perform updates outside of business hours.
  • Allow ample time to complete the backup.

Read the Release Notes

The Switchvox Release Notes include all of the enhancements or changes in the update, and a list of issues (bugs) that have been resolved in the update. This is helpful to understand exactly what's going to happen when you update to the new version.
To read the release notes from the Switchvox web suite:
  1. On Server > Maintenance > Updates, find the most current update available in the list.
  2. Click more info... for that update.

Locate the Updates

  1. Go to Server > Maintenance > Updates.
  2. Locate the update in the list. Be sure that you follow the Correct Switchvox SMB Software Upgrade Path.
  3. After you locate the update file, you may click either the Download or Download and Apply icon. Those options are discussed in another section of this article.

Important Notes

  • If the Updates page says:no updates are available for your system, then you already have the newest version of the software and updating is not necessary.
  • If there are one or more updates listed, you can review the update’s release note by clicking the: more info... link.
  • If you see a message indicating the system is offline, put the system online before trying to download an update again.
  • Do not refresh your web browser during either download action. To check on the status of the update, go to: https://YourSwitchvox/admin?cmd=check_update
  • After you apply an update, Switchvox removes the files for that update and any previous updates you may have downloaded.

      Download Update file

      1. Click the Download icon for the update you want to use. A progress indicator tells you how long the download will take. NOTE: This action makes the necessary files available for your Switchvox system, but it does not apply them.
      2. After the download is complete, you should apply the update within the next 24 hours, otherwise you many encounter an error 256. If so, you will have to call Technical Support to have the stale file removed.

      Download and Apply Update file

Click Download and Apply for the update if you wish to download and apply the update immediately. Do this after you have performed your backup and downloaded it to a different drive.

      Verify System and Phone Functionality

After applying the upload, do the following to verify that the system is functioning properly:

      1. Go to Server > Diagnostics > Connection Status > SIP Phones to make sure phones are registered and there are no new alarms under Hardware Devices.
      2. Go to Server > Networking > IP Configuration to make sure those settings are correct.
      3. Make a call from a Switchvox extension to another extension, and to an external phone number.
      4. If possible, make a call into Switchvox (e.g., from a mobile phone) to ensure your main IVR is responding normally.
      5. If appropriate, check sending and receiving of faxes.

      Create a New Backup

After completing the update, create a new backup of the system. You should always keep backups on a different drive so they are accessible if your server crashes.
